In the November 1981 edition of Flying Saucer Review, a witness claimed to have had a peculiar and terrifying experience with an enormous cigar-shaped UFO above the ocean. At the time of the event, she was working as an English-language secretary for NATO in Paris and was on a military-sanctioned mission onboard an Air Canada DC-8 aircraft, according to an anonymous witness. The witness was flying from Paris to Canada with fifty NATO staff members who were attending NATO Ministerial Conference in Ottawa. At the time, the aircraft was travelling over the Atlantic Ocean, and the witness was seated in a window seat and observing the sky when she spotted something unique and large.

When I reached down to retrieve a book from my carry-on, I was astounded to catch a glimpse of something black and enormous that stood in stark contrast to the surrounding light. I was unable to believe my sight. I put my face against the window in disbelief as a massive dark grey 'torpedo' loomed almost beneath the DC-8. It was scary and terrifying, and I perceived it to be immobile. It was unlike anything I had ever witnessed in my whole life. It appeared to be constructed of steel. There were no portholes or windows visible. Without wings or protrusions. Nothing but the long, ideal torpedo shape, complete with a bullet-shaped head and a cleanly and precisely cut tail. The creature was well below us, and I underline that it was its horrifying magnitude that impressed me. I estimated that it was around 2,000 meters below us, but I had no method of measuring or estimating the size of the object. A swath of small clouds began to move over the monster, but it was still visible through them for a few seconds before disappearing from view.

Unidentified witness

When the witness glanced around the almost empty plane, she noticed that the other passengers were either asleep or absorbed in book reading. This led her to conclude that no one else on the trip had seen the big object. The witness was deeply troubled by what she recently seen. Fearing that no one would believe her and that she would be ridiculed, she opted to remain silent.

After reading various books about UFOs, she realized she wasn't insane. Thus, she was certain that she had observed an alien craft. She would also begin to believe that the item she had seen was connected to something much more terrifying that had occurred following her encounter.

Mysterious UFO Over the Ocean of Our Planet

As I recall, I pondered the huge 'torpedo' for around half an hour before the DC- 8 began to violently shake and pitch up and down, first nose-diving sharply upwards, then nose-diving steeply downwards, and this continued for a very long time. I could explain that I had frequently experienced turbulence and 'air-pockets' while traveling by planes, but nothing like to this. It seemed as though we were on a massive elevator that was rapidly ascending and descending. And as if that were not enough, a series of sounds resembling cannon fire or thunder now filled the cabin.

In the meantime, the plane continued to violently shiver and 'buck,' and each time it descended, I got the impression that it was going to split in half. Throughout this entire event, everyone in the passenger compartment sat horrified, completely quiet, and white-faced. After a time, I felt such terror that I ran to the front of the plane in search of a stewardess, yelling, "What's going on? I'm afraid!" I raised a curtain in front of what appeared to be a sleeping berth and discovered a stewardess sobbing on the bed with her hands covering her eyes. She did not respond to my yells, and there was complete quiet save from the sound of the plane's engines, which were superimposed by repeated "thunderclaps" and the plane's persistent bucking.

I returned to my seat and found myself instantly covered in perspiration. Every pore in my body appeared to be active. Nonetheless, I observed that the light clothing I was wearing was fully dry. I hurried ahead to the stewardesses' quarters a second time, but nobody was there. I pounded on the door leading to the cockpit and yelled again, wondering what was going on, since I was terrified. The second stewardess came out, looked at me as if I were an idiot, and remained silent for a long. Then, she stated calmly, "Ladies and Gentlemen, do not be alarmed: the cabin is depressurizing." Soon thereafter, the identical message was heard to be made by the captain.

Despite having no prior awareness of UFOs, she now feels there is a strong connection between the two events. Her concerns extend to the likelihood that the crew attempted to conceal information regarding the occurrence.

I would want to know if the violent behavior of the airplane and the loud noises may be attributed to the "depressurization" process, and if so, what conditions are likely to have necessitated such terrifying and harsh measures? As the calm demeanor of the second-mentioned stewardess seems to imply, is this type of occurrence typical and common? And in that case, why did it appear like the other stewardess was crying? Was this because, like the rest of us, she found the turbulence to be a little unsettling? Alternatively, is it conceivable that she was still in shock after witnessing the enormous "torpedo"? It would be fascinating to learn the answers to these questions.

Regarding the staff, just one of the flight attendants appeared unhappy. Certainty dictates that the pilots in the nacelle would have had ample opportunity to view the 'cigar,' since it crossed their flight path diagonally from their port side and far below them. When we landed in Canada, neither the captain nor any other crew member provided any explanation or comment on the 'cigar,' nor did Canadian officials make any statement. We were flying under the aegis of the NATO, and as such, we were under military control. In such a situation, it would not be strange if the cockpit crew and stewardesses were less forthright about a UFO than they may have been if the trip were a typical passenger flight.

A second occurrence with a similarly enormous UFO that allegedly inflicted physical damage to a military vessel happened in the Bermuda Triangle southeast of Florida on July 2, 1971. On this day, the USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67 aircraft carrier returned to Norfolk, Virginia after completing a two-week operational readiness drill in the Caribbean, where they were to take some time off before beginning six months of service in the Mediterranean. The primary witness who reported this incident to the National UFO Reporting Center was assigned to the communications center at the time, where he monitored teletypes printing Fleet Broadcasts.

This evening at around 8:30 p.m., his equipment abruptly began failing, and he rapidly realized that all ship-wide communications were down. Someone then began shouting that something was hovering over the ship, and when he and a few others stepped up, they observed something for which their training had never prepared them. It resembled a Mothership UFO.

When we looked up, we observed a big, luminous sphere. It appeared to be huge, but there was no reference point. Hence, if the sphere were low, say 100 feet above the ship, its diameter would have been between two and three hundred feet. If it had stated that the ship was 500 feet long, it would have been greater. It was roughly the size of a beach ball at arm's length. It was silent, as far as I could tell. The light emanating from it was almost half as brilliant as the sun. It progressively pulsed from yellow to orange. When General Quarters (Battle stations) was sounding and the Communication Officer was in the hallway asking us to return to the Comm Center, we were only able to view it for around 20 seconds. We came back and remained there (that was out battle station). We had little to do because all communication was still down.

After around 20 minutes, the teletypes resumed printing properly. We remained in General Quarters for another hour before securing. I did not observe or hear any messages on the occurrence. For the following three hours, I spoke with a close buddy who was a radar operator in the CIC (combat information center). Around the time of the event, he informed me, every radar screen was lighting brightly. I also spoke with an acquaintance who works on the Navigation Bridge. He informed me that none of the compasses were functioning and that a boatswain's mate who was a lookout on the signal bridge had to be sedated. I assumed this individual was the one shouting that God was present. It was amusing that just a handful of the 5,000 troops on a carrier really witnessed this phenomena. This was owing to the fact that flight Operations had just concluded a short time before to this happening, and all flight deck staff were resting below. It should be emphasized that there are relatively few areas on a ship where one may be in the open air.

Important witness to the incident

Soon after, he discovered that not just the communications equipment, but also several other pieces of technology, including the airplane, had ceased functioning while the enigmatic thing hovered above. On top of this, it appears that "guys in trench coats" are already on board, questioning witnesses about what they have observed, and that the entire situation is being concealed.

According to what I was able to determine, practically all electronic components ceased functioning during the roughly 20 minutes that whatever it was hovered over the ship. Two combat-ready F-4 Phantoms, designated as Ready CAPs (Combat Air Patrol), were unable to start. The rumor mill informed me that three or four "guys in trenchcoats" had landed and were interrogating individuals who had witnessed this phenomena. I was never interviewed, maybe because nobody knew I had watched the film. Some days later, as we neared Norfolk, the Commanding and Executive Officers appeared on our closed-circuit television system. They did this often to communicate with the crew and provide information. At this specific session, the Captain informed us of our planned deployment to the Mediterranean and praised our performance on the ORE. At the conclusion of his speech, he stated, "I would want to remind the crew that some events that occur on a Navy Combatant Ship are classified and should not be shared with anybody who does not have a need to know." This was the only official information I got or learned about the event.

Important witness to the incident

Another event involving much larger aircraft occurred on October 24, 1989, and it was more stranger. A report filed by a sailor aboard the USS Memphis (SSN-698) submarine, which operates out of Cape Canaveral, Florida. They were on a special mission to defend the Space Program and were around 150 miles off the coast of Florida when the submarine suffered a number of mechanical problems.

Enigmatic UFO Phenomena

Some technological items began to malfunction. It was impossible to communicate, tanks were bursting uncontrollably, navigation was lost, and even the reactor controls were failing. Due to the risky nature of the situation, they emerged and converted to diesel engines.

It was pouring, and the sky was as red as a neon sign. I observed a big V-shaped UFO towards the port side. The executive officer instructed me to hold my position while he spoke with the captain. A minute later, the captain emerged on the tower and inquired about the distance to the ship. The laser rangefinder revealed that the nearest location was 200 meters away from the port, while the furthest point was 1,000 meters away. The UFO was not parallel to our ship, but rather at a 45° angle. This enormous warship was more than a half-mile wide. The UFO did a half-circle around our ship before passing across the stern, which caused our electronic systems to malfunction. We sustained irreversible damage to the communications and sonar room. When the thing sailed over the stern, I observed the rain cease beneath its red light as it passed over the stern. The water appeared to rise about a foot as the UFO flew softly overhead. After the UFO completed its swing over the stern, it halted, the sky grew redder, and it accelerated away at a remarkable rate within 15 seconds. Our ship restored to normal, with the exception of the radio and sonar, when the UFO departed. The captain instructed us to restore to reactor power and get going after a brief system check.

When they arrived at the dock, he says, their superiors seized them and placed them in "protective custody." They were given the "official version" and cautioned not to discuss what they had witnessed during a difficult moment.

During seven hours, we reached port, when I was placed into "protective custody." I concurred with two enlisted guys that we had spotted a genuine UFO. I was the only one who knew its exact dimensions because I was the one who measured it with a laser rangefinder. While the ship hovered, I fired against it and received consistent readings, as opposed to the sporadic ones I would receive from debris. We had been in holding for around three hours when an Air Force officer arrived and told us that a weather satellite had exploded. The Navy subsequently assigned practically the entire crew to new positions. This comprised the captain, the officer of the deck, and the whole crew. They were separated, which nearly never occurs absent a promotion or a change in leadership, neither of which occurred.
