Most expectant mothers spend a significant portion of their pregnancy daydreaming about the birth of their child – the soothing music, the calming massage, and the pain relief just a scream away. However, this courageous Queensland mother welcomed her daughter on the side of a dusty highway.
Lydia Kirk gave birth on a makeshift bed on the Bruce Highway last week, somewhere between Bowen and Proserpine, with a local landowner acting as a nurse. This is one of the most Australian birth stories you're ever likely to hear. After a lengthy first u, the expecting mother believed she had plenty of time to reach the hospital. However, her daughter had other plans.
Chris Broucek was rushing his Bowen partner Lydia Kirk to Proserpine Hospital on October 6 when Ms. Kirk observed that her daughter was beginning to crown. Lydia explained that her hometown of Bowen lacks a t sut, so she and her Chris Broucek knew they had a 70km drive ahead of them. The now-mother-of-two revealed, "I told Chris, 'I have to 'us', 'I have to 'us,' and he replied, 'No, you don't!' Prior to beginning our journey to Proserpine Hospital, we visited Bowen Hospital, where our informed us that we were four centimeters t and needed to begin our journey to Proserpine. I told my companion that I needed to us approximately halfway through our drive. He responded, "I don't think so!" I used approximately three times and informed him, "I can feel a bulge, Chris, and I can feel her head."
Lydia reports that this is when Chris took action and called tle zero, but Layla was already well on her way. She stated, "We were still driving when she became, and I carried her to my chest." He had to use his hands to rip off my u because I had to pull them to the side when she entered the room. The couple then pulled over and followed the instructions of the operator over the phone, which included Lydia laying on the side of the road because her seat couldn't recline because of the car seats in the back. Lydia added, "While we waited for the u, a local property owner stopped and brought us some towels. As soon as the u arrived, they ensured that Layla and I were safe and brought Chris to the ut ."
Ms. Kirk stated that she held Layla closely while Mr. Broucke dialed 911. He stated that paramedics instructed him to lay his e down, but he was unable to fully recline the front passenger seat in their vehicle due to baby seats in the back. Mr. Broucek stated, "However, I had a us's t and some blankets, so I constructed a makeshift bed on the side of the road. I couldn't remove the baby because of the, I didn't have my Lt or, and I had to the jocks with my hands because they expected the afterbirth to continue to come out."
Ms Kirk, who also has a two and a half-year-old son with Mr Broucek, said her first 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 was also quick and she believed the second time would be no different. An ᴀᴍʙuʟᴀɴᴄᴇ arrived to meet the couple on the side of the road to make sure Layla was ok. Paramedics helped Mr Broucek ᴄut tʜᴇ uᴍʙɪʟɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴏʀᴅ as his wife lay on a makeshift bed on the grass. Lydia said: “Not a lot was going through my mind except wondering if Layla was okay and healthy – she came so quickly that I was in a state of sʜᴏᴄᴋ to be honest. I’m just glad I had Chris with me because he took over the situation and made sure everything was okay.”
